References on Resume?

Job Seeker: I like to put my references on the resume. I think it saves time when I’m applying and I don’t need to bring a separate sheet with my references on it.

Career Coach: We advise you never to put the references on your resume. There are few reasons why you shouldn’t. A good practice when you get an interview is to call your references and prepare them by telling them what you’ve applied for and what strengths you would like them to mention. If references are on the resume, the employer may make a phone call before you get the interview. It may eliminate you before you get a chance to put your best foot forward in person. If you’re completing a lot of applications, the reference may get a lot of calls and ask you to take them off the list.  The only time you will put references on your resume is if the job posting specifically asks you to do that.
