Job descriptions often list the “ideal” qualifications – a wish list for the employer.

How do you decide if you should apply?

  • Do you meet the core key requirements, but not the optional (nice-to-haves)?
  • Can you demonstrate your ability to learn?
  • Do you have a passion for the company’s mission and values?
  • Have you considered your transferable skills? When reframed, they may meet the requirements

In your tailored resume and cover letter:

  • Focus on your strengths
  • Highlight your relevant experience
  • Quantify your accomplishments
  • Explain how you align with the company’s culture and value system
  • If you have them, highlight your “preferred” qualities, examples are:
    • Fluent Spanish speaker (preferred)
    • Class 2 driver’s license (preferred)
    • High School graduate (preferred)

Handpick your references!

  • Someone you worked closely with who will speak to your abilities and skills.
  • A co-worker who has witnessed you developing a new competency.
  • A supervisor who can attest to your work ethic.

Ask yourself, “Could I do this job?” If the answer is YES – APPLY!

What do you have to lose? You may be exactly what they are really looking for!
