Sometimes, even though you know you are headed the right way, you just can’t resist turning around and going back to what is familiar. We recognize that staying in our comfort zone is not what is best for us, but it is what is easiest. We can miss out on amazing things just because we don’t go for what’s already right in front of us. Experience Counts is one of those opportunities. This is a program that can help you get back into the workforce or explore new opportunities. So, what do you do when it is offered to you?
Why you may hesitate to join.
You:
- Get anxious in a group. You have been at home by yourself for a long time
- Currently don’t get up and get ready for the day until mid-morning (and you like it)
- Don’t know what you want to do or can do
- Are embarrassed that you don’t know how to use new technology or technology in general
- Did not do well in school
- Can’t sit for any length of time or maybe you don’t hear as well as you used to
- Are not good enough to be part of a group
- Think that the whole process is pointless; nobody wants to hire a mature worker
- Don’t understand why things can’t be the way they used to be?
- Are just plain afraid!
How are you going to overcome your fear of joining?
- Keep the end goal in mind!
- Don’t overthink the process
- Don’t let your past dictate your future
- Be open to new ideas and concepts
Remember
- Tell your facilitator or co-worker that you are nervous – you won’t be the only one
- If you need accommodations – ASK! You won’t be the only one
- If you are overwhelmed, remember – you won’t be the only one
- If we all knew it all, there would be no reason for programs like this
- Everyone is here for the same reason regardless of where they have been
Why you should be eager to join and what you gain!
You:
- Learn that people value your experience and can proudly explain why they need you
- Are no longer afraid of technology
- Have a great reason to get up and get ready for the day
- Gain valuable job search techniques
