Changing careers later in life isn’t about trying to compete with younger candidates – it’s about embracing your past experiences and finding opportunities to utilize your skills, knowledge, and experiences.  It is never too late to pivot into a new industry; starting a new career can be daunting and intimidating at any age.  Many employers truly embrace the experience and insights mature employees can bring to a company.

Here are a few tips that can assist you in ensuring a smooth transition:

Look back at your past positions and identify your transferable skills. These are competencies you may have used when you managed people, used effective verbal/written communication, budgeting, multitasking, time management, and conflict resolution.

Learn new skills.  Short courses that offer certifications will enhance your resume and show employers you are willing to learn.

Don’t forget to utilize your network.  Take every opportunity to make personal and professional connections.  Reach out to past coworkers, friends, and family.  Make people aware that you are looking for employment and tap into the hidden job market.

Volunteer where you can. Sign up for a volunteer position with an organization you would like to work for.  This will tell employers you are motivated and serious about working for them.

Whether you are reentering the workforce or pivoting into a new career later in life, you are never too old to learn, contribute, and make an impact.  New opportunities are an exciting way to rediscover your strengths and use your experiences in new roles.
