Did you know that your body language displays your assertiveness?
- Stand or sit up straight – shoulders back
- Direct your attention to the speaker, make eye contact
- Walk with a purpose
Now – throw in your verbal communication
- Be direct (not rude)
- Use a confident tone that matches your body language
- Be clear when saying “no”, do not be subtle which will open the door for you to waiver with your response
- Use “I” statements. Rather than appearing aggressive, say, “I feel,” “I think,” etc.
Developing the ability to stand up for yourself will make you a respected employee. As long as you are clear in your goals and wants you can be assertive without being aggressive.
