Emotional intelligence (EQ or EI) is the ability to understand, manage, and use emotions effectively—both your own and others’. It is about being aware, thoughtful, and intentional in how emotions shape behavior, decisions, and relationships.

Emotional intelligence includes:

Self-awareness:  Recognizing what you feel and why

Self-regulation:  Managing emotions rather than being controlled by them

Motivation:  Using emotions to stay focused and resilient

Empathy: Understanding others’ feelings

Social skills: Communicating and relating well with people

High emotional intelligence involves managing emotions thoughtfully. Lower emotional intelligence can result in emotions driving reactions and choices. Not to be confused with IQ, which is a fixed number, emotional intelligence can be developed through reflection, practice, and openness to feedback.

Rather than ignoring or suppressing your emotions, pay attention to them and they will guide better choices and more meaningful interactions.
